Hypnosis is often feared because stage hypnotists suggest a “power-over” flavour in their shows. The reality is that very few of us are happy to be manipulated for the amusement of others. So the people who seem to be controlled by the hypnotist could be best described as willing collaborators.

In a therapeutic setting the emphasis is on co-operation between therapist and client for the client’s benefit. We all have the ability to go into a trance—there’s the shopping trance, the driving trance, the reading trance, the cleaning trance, you get the picture! So a hypnotic trance is described as a state of altered (but conscious) awareness. In hypnosis you know what is being said to you and have the ability to bring yourself out of trance if you decide to.

In a light trance state you will experience a sense of being very comfortable and relaxed physically but alert mentally. This trance state may be used for different purposes: to help you learn how to relax; to help you get in touch with past experience and heal old hurts; to “rehearse” new responses and behaviour in imagination; or to receive positive suggestions which take effect after the session, helping you to feel calmer, more relaxed and more confident in your everyday life. I use hypnosis as a tool to enhance other therapeutic work that we do together, but only if desired by my client. For more information on hypnotherapy please visit the website of the National Register of Hypnotherapists and Psychotherapists — www.nrhp.co.uk
